Hilarity ensued when White Home Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre couldn’t decipher a reporter’s accent, resulting in a long change about God of Thunder and Asgardian man Thor for some cause.

At Friday’s press briefing, AFP White Home correspondent Sebastian Smith had the briefing room in stitches along with his attempt to get KJP to understand his pronunciation of the word “thaw”:

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Go beforehand.

Q Thanks, Karine. So, when the President of Japan — ears pricked up when he mentioned a thaw or maybe a conceivable coming thaw with China. A thaw.

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Oh, say that another time.

Q A thaw. Yeah, my accent — T-H-A-W. (Laughter.)

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Oh. (Laughter.)

Q Yeah, I — I forgive you.

Q Thaw.

Q I forgive you. I’m now not speaking of Thor, the God of no matter, you understand. (Laughter.)

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Which is what we heard lots the day prior to this.

Q That would had been a hell of a (inaudible). Anyway.

Q The God of Thunder —

Q Yes, yes.

Q — only for the document.

Q So, thaw. Thaw. That sounded like —

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: “God of Thunder,” as we’re hearing from the again.

Q Yeah, God of Thunder. Yeah, he had lightning bolts and stuff like that. (Laughter.)

Q Thor.

Q Thaw. I think like I’m in a “Monty Python” sketch here. (Laughter.) I kind of —

He — he noted a thaw, which everybody — everybody’s ears pricked up when he mentioned that.

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Oh, a thaw. A thaw.

Q Yes, a thaaww.

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: oK. (Laughter.)

Q Can I say it like that? A thaaww.

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: A thaaww.

Q A thaaaww.

oK. (Laughter.) So, there we are.

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: There’s quite a bit going down here, other folks. It’s Friday.

Q K. It’s Friday.

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: It’s Friday.

Q I’ve a practice-up, through the way in which. (Laughter.)

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: On the thaaww?

Q oKay, so there we are: the President and his thaw. (Laughter.)

We’ve because learned — nowadays we learned that the CIA director used to be in China a while before this temporary point out of “the phrase I received’t repeat” in Japan. Is that — are these two things related? Did the director come again with some news that may make the President think about a thaw?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: So, as — because it rela- — (laughs) — because it relates to the CIA director’s shuttle, I would have to refer you to — to the CIA immediately to speak to that. I simply do- — I’m now not going to get into it from here, from the rostrum, so I must refer you to the CIA.

Q K. And the way a couple of — how about any — I do know you’re going to inform me you got nothing to share, but how m- — how about a telephone name with President Xi?

MS. JEAN-PIERRE: Neatly, appear, the President is having a look forward to Pres- — to talking to President Xi. As you realize, they’ve spoken many times in the closing two years. Just don’t have anything else to learn out. When the — the time per- — is appropriate, surely that conversation will occur.
