Roger Federer ended a legendary career Friday night in London alongside longtime rival Rafael Nadal, who joined him in doubles for his closing journey into retirement.

The 2-decade ambassador for the game of tennis performed his final in shape, losing alongside Nadal. The duo represented Europe within the Laver Cup in opposition to Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Staff World.

They have been defeated.

Federer cried, as did Nadal, the moment it sank in the former wad headed into retirement at age 41.

Federer mentioned he was once not sad, but grateful to have laced up his sneakers for a ultimate time.

“Appear, it’s been a gorgeous day,” he mentioned. “I told the fellows I’m chuffed, I’m no longer sad. It feels nice to be here. I enjoyed tying my sneakers yet another time, and everything was the remaining time.”

Federer delivered:

It’s been excellent, and naturally playing with [Nadal] on the same staff, and having all of the guys here and all of the legends, Rocket, Stefan Edberg. Thanks. It’s wonderful, it in reality is. I didn’t need it to feel lonely in the market. It felt lonely for a 2d when they told me to come out another time, it didn’t feel great. But to say goodbye in a workforce, I at all times felt I was a team player at heart.

“It’s been nice, it’s been a lot enjoyable, it’s been amazing. Thanks, everyone,” he said. “I’ve had so many people cheer me on. You guys right here tonight, it manner the arena.”

Federer had now not performed tennis competitively since remaining summer season after he underwent knee surgery. He completed his occupation as a 20-time Grand Slam singles champion.
