Deputy Secretary of Native land Security Troy Edgar offered dumbfounding responses when requested to provide an explanation for why the Trump administration arrested a Columbia University graduate and is making an attempt to deport him.

On Saturday, federal sellers arrested 30-12 months-previous Mahmoud Khalil at his college-owned residence in entrance of his pregnant wife, who is a U.S. citizen. Khalil, a Palestinian inexperienced card holder who went to Columbia on a scholar visa, graduated from the varsity in December and helped arrange one of the campus protests in opposition to Israel’s conflict in Gaza. He also acted as a mediator between demonstrators and the college. At the moment, he’s being held at a detention facility in Louisiana.

Khalil has no longer been charged with against the law. As an alternative, the Trump administration has mentioned he engaged in actions that “align to Hamas,” the terrorist organization that controls Gaza and carried out the Oct. 7 attacks. On the other hand, the administration has mentioned no specific conduct despite revoking his green card, and with it, his standing as a permanent lawful resident.

President Donald Trump vowed Khalil’s apprehension will be “the primary arrest of many to come.”

NPR’s Michel Martin interviewed Edgar for Thursday’s Morning Version, where the reporter requested for the rationale behind Mahmoud’s arrest and looming deportation. After making vague allegations about “assisting terrorism,” Edgar arrived at “pro-Palestinian process”:

MARTIN: So, what is the particular behavior the government alleges that Mr. Khalil engaged in that deserves removing from the US?

EDGAR: I think what you noticed there’s you’ve obtained any individual that has come into the u . s . on a visa. And as he’s going during the visa process, he’s coming in to principally be a scholar that’s not going to be assisting terrorism. So, the issue is he used to be let into the united states of america on this visa. He has been selling this antisemitism task at the university. And at this point, the State Division has revoked his visa for helping a terrorist kind group. And we’re the enforcing companies, so we’ve come in to basically arrest him.

MARTIN: A White House legit informed the Free Press that there’s no allegation that he broke any regulations. So, again, I’ve to ask, what namely constitutes terrorist job that he was once assisting? What precisely do you say he did?

EDGAR: Well, like I mentioned, whilst you observe for a visa, you go during the process in an effort to say that you just’re here on a pupil visa, That doesn’t manage to pay for you the entire rights of coming in and principally going via this course of, agitating and supporting Hamas. So, at this point, yeah, the Secretary of State and the State Department maintains the best to revoke the visa, and that’s what they’ve performed.

MARTIN: How did he enhance Hamas? Precisely what did he do?

EDGAR: Smartly, I believe you’ll discover it on TV, right? That is someone that we’ve invited and allowed the coed to come into the united states of america, and he’s put himself in the midst of the process of mainly professional-Palestinian task. And at this point, like I stated, the Secretary of State can evaluate his visa process at any point and revoke it.

Martin went on to ask if criticism of the federal government is a “deportable offense.”

“Let me put it this manner, Michel,” Edgar spoke back. “Imagine if he came in and filled out the shape and stated, ‘I need a pupil visa.’ They requested him, ‘What are you going to do right here?’ And he says, ‘I’m going to head and protest.’ We might have never let him into the country.”

As the protests have been in full force ultimate April, Khalil spoke with Wolf Blitzer of CNN and addressed concerns expressed by using some Jewish students who mentioned they felt hazardous on campus.

“I might say that the liberation of Palestine and the Palestinians and the Jewish people are intertwined,” he said on the time. “They go hand in hand. Anti-Semitism and any form of racism has no situation on campus and on this motion.”
