Former ESPN sportscaster Rachel Nichols stated on Showtime’s The entire Smoke podcast this week that the leaked audio resulting in her exit from the sports network was once receive by somebody “spying” on her in her hotel room.

Nichols is becoming a member of Showtime Basketball as a sportscaster and host, her first NBA-targeted gig seeing that leaving ESPN for NBC Sports activities.

Speaking with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on the newest episode of the basketball podcast, Nichols spoke at length about her time at and unfriendly departure from the community.

“I was once being told, well, you’re no longer a staff player, which any girl in trade is aware of is code, proper?” she said of being asked to step aside on webhosting the NBA finals. “Ladies are imagined to be kumbaya. and crew players. and helpful; males are aggressive sharks and all of that.”

In terms of the leaked audio of Nichols talking about then-colleague Maria Taylor, Nichols said somebody was able to file her as a result of she was once unfamiliar with equipment provided for far off broadcasting throughout covid restrictions, resulting in a live “line” from her room,

“I didn’t know that in the event you depart a specific app running in the background, that the line from my hotel room looking into my resort room to Bristol would keep open,” she stated.

Nichols described being in her room the whole day, doing issues like unpacking and making telephone calls, with no one offering a heads up.

“Unfortunately, that complete time, no person back at ESPN advised me that there was once an open line to my resort room and any person who seemed on the feed may see me,” she stated. “No one shut it off, determined, Oh, she obviously doesn’t understand she’s being watched, unpacking or doing all these other things.”

And it wasn’t just that it was once open, however “a minimum of” one person was actively spectating.

“At least one particular person determined to just take a seat and watch and started spying on me like I was their very own private television exhibit,” she mentioned, together with recording her telephone conversations. “Once they heard something they concept was, you see, they picked up their mobile phone and so they started recording my dialog on their cell phone.”

Nichols went through some of what she said and tried to explain her intent to Barnes and Jackson, who prior to now defended her. She additionally added that e one who recorded her sat on the tape for a 12 months.

“Just saved it in their pocket,” she stated, unless they could use it for “leverage” in their own negotiations with the network.
