President Joe Biden denounced the physical assault towards Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), the GOP nominee in the New York gubernatorial race.

At a Thursday rally, Zeldin was conversing when David Jakubonis, forty three, walked onto the stage and grabbed Zeldin. He seemed to take a look at and stab the congressman with a sharp object ahead of he used to be pulled to the ground.

Jakubonis was charged with 2d-degree assault and launched hours after his arrest, in keeping with the New York Put up.

In a commentary on Friday, Biden stated:

I condemn the attack on Congressman Zeldin in the strongest terms. As I’ve said sooner than, violence has absolutely no situation in our society or our politics. I’m particularly grateful for the courage of folks who instantly intervened, and that he is unharmed and used to be ready to continue his speech. I also want to thank the regulation enforcement officers who quickly took action and are investigating this assault that defies our fundamental democratic values.

Zeldin’s Democratic opponent, incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul, also slammed the attack.

“My crew has informed me about the incident at Lee Zeldin’s marketing campaign event tonight. Relieved to hear that Congressman Zeldin was once now not injured and that the suspect is in custody. I condemn this violent behavior within the strongest terms possible — it has no location in New York,” she tweeted.
