Kevin McCarthy

The House needed a 15th ballot early Saturday morning to select Kevin McCarthy speaker of the House after he fell one vote short late Friday night.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) shouted “Present!” with the determining vote as McCarthy didn’t notch a majority to transform House speaker on Friday evening after key Republican holdouts continued to refuse his bid for the gavel. The outcome resulted in a heated exchange between McCarthy and Gaetz.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) immediately needed to be restrained after he and Gaetz bought into a capturing fit. After cooler heads prevailed, Republicans determined to vote once more – this time with McCarthy certain he had the votes to win. And he did.

McCarthy vowed all the way through a turbulent week that he would not surrender his quest for the position. He confronted stiff opposition amongst members of his own birthday party.

A day previous, McCarthy lost 21 votes among GOP members all through the 11th round of balloting. McCarthy instructed CNN’s Manu Raju on Friday afternoon he believed he had finally made enough offers after the Home voted to adjourn until 10 p.m. ET.

Raju requested, “Mr. McCarthy, do you assume you may have the votes to be elected Speaker tonight?”

“Yes,” McCarthy responded.

McCarthy didn’t have the votes.

Friday night time’s failed vote extended a contentious course of that has viewed McCarthy attacked by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as a mere “squatter” occupying the speaker’s place of job. The process also noticed Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) criticize her colleague Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) as “not critical” over her opposition to McCarthy’s bid to steer her party’s majority.

It was the first time because 1923 that a candidate for speaker did not get elected on the primary ballot. Then-incumbent Home Speaker Frederick Gillett retained the gavel after four days and nine votes. In 1855, Rep. Nathaniel Banks was once eventually elected speaker after two months and 133 ballots.

It is a creating story that has been up to date.
