Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) told CNN’s Kasie Hunt he’d be “very concerned” for the security of his youngsters if they attended Columbia University amid ongoing protests.

More than 100 have been arrested via police at an ongoing protest that includes a huge encampment faculty officials say students had been warned multiple instances about. Demonstrators are calling for an end to Israel’s strikes on Gaza amid lots of civilian casualties. The Anti-Defamation League has also raised alarm about antisemitism at campuses throughout the united states amid ongoing protests, and the White House in the past condemned antisemitism at Columbia’s massive demonstration.

Gottheimer joined Hunt on CNN This Morning on Tuesday after travelling Columbia College and seeing the protests and encampments firsthand.

Gottheimer used to be joined through fellow Jewish lawmakers Reps. Dan Goldman (D-NY), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), and Kathy Manning (D-NC) during the travel to Columbia.

“Would you are feeling safe sending your youngsters to Columbia on this surroundings?” Hunt asked Gottheimer.

“After what I noticed the day prior to this? I might be very involved, and I understand why oldsters can be very concerned,” the lawmaker mentioned.

Gottheimer mentioned what he noticed used to be “unacceptable” on any faculty campus and pushed for schools to do extra to foster secure environments for all students.

The lawmaker introduced that he would enhance investigations into how schools handle reviews of antisemitism to resolve whether federal dollars will have to be pulled. He said one protester at Columbia name for Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7 to be repeated heaps more times, and quite a few Jewish students advised him about their experiences being “threatened” and “intimidated” inside and outdoors their dorms.

“I believe that’s unacceptable that they may be able to’t even feel secure on the campus, and I believe that it echoes a huge responsibility now that lots of my colleagues are calling for, that these university presidents throughout the u . s . a . step up and supply a protected house for all college students,” Gottheimer concluded.
