White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tore into former President Donald Trump for his de facto admission that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, however then-Vice President Mike Pence could have “overturned” it.

Trump released a statement over the weekend by which he lashed out at Pence, and argued that the push to reform the Electoral Count Act demonstrates that “Mike Pence did have the proper to vary the end result, and so they now need to take that instantly. Sadly, he didn’t train that energy, he may have overturned the Election!”

At Monday’s press briefing, PBS NewsHour Chief Washington Correspondent and MSNBC analyst Geoff Bennett requested Psaki about Biden’s view of the Electoral Depend Act.

“On vote casting rights, what’s the President’s view on the early bipartisan talks round rewriting, reforming the Electoral Depend Act?” he requested, and brought that “there is in all probability new urgency, given the former President’s feedback at that rally and within the remark the place he appeared to admit to this scheme to overturn the election leads to 2020.”

Psaki tore into Trump over the Capitol riot itself, as well as his more recent comments:

[I]n phrases of the previous President, his movements represented a singular and existential danger to our democracy, because the President has mentioned again and again. However, you realize, his remarks this weekend, he defended the actions of his supporters who stormed the Capitol and brutally attacked the regulation enforcement officers defending it.

I feel it’s important to shout that out and get in touch with that out. He even attacked his own Vice President for not, in his words, having “overturned the election.” And it’s only a reminder of how unfit he’s for place of business. And it’s telling that even some of his closest allies have rejected these remarks as inappropriate within the days considering that.

As it pertains to the Electoral Count Act: As you noted, Jeff, for your query, I imply, it isn’t a replacement. And I believe why we keep pronouncing that is because we don’t want any person to suggest, who supports it, that it’s a substitute for the John Lewis Balloting Rights Act or other voting rights law that has necessary components of it that would provide a normal baseline and important protections for folk across the united states who are looking to exercise their elementary right.

We’ve been open to and a part of conversations about the Electoral Count Act. We’ve never been adverse to it. We simply don’t want it to be a replacement for it.
