Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) delivered a speech on the House floor on Tuesday during which he claimed the GOP is “negotiating in excellent religion” to preclude a executive shutdown that he stated birthday party members “don’t need.”

His remarks appeared to irk Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA), who read comments from distinguished Republicans welcoming a shutdown.

Unless Congress and the White House agree on spending legislation to fund the government beyond Sept. 30, the federal government will shut down. Thus far, the Republican-managed House has been hobbled by using intra-birthday celebration fighting that has rendered it unable to pass the bill or payments important to make sure the federal government continues to function.

“We’re taking a stand here,” Johnson said on the floor. “We’re operating in excellent faith. We’re negotiating together for one of the best outcome for the folks. And we do not need a shutdown.”

Boyle rose to speak in response and went straight away at Johnson:

The previous speaker just stated that no Republican member needs a shutdown. I have the charges right here, which I’ll publish for the document once I’m finished. One Home Republican stated, “Let’s shut it down.” Some other Republican colleague saying, “We shouldn’t concern a govt shutdown… most Americans won’t even miss it.” And the leader of the Republican Birthday Celebration – the former president – announcing, “Unless you get the whole thing, shut it down.”

Make no mistake about it. We’re right here as a result of certain members on the opposite facet of the aisle want a shutdown. They even mentioned they want a shutdown. And why should we be surprised about that? Ever on the grounds that I used to be in highschool 30 years in the past, we’ve had 5 executive shutdowns. All five befell beneath Home Republican leadership. When Democrats are in command of the Home, zero executive shutdowns throughout that same period of time.

Boyle went on to checklist the consequences of a shutdown, including lost advantages for welfare recipients and the furloughing of federal employees.
