Fox News White Home correspondent Peter Doocy requested Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt why the United States has engaged in talks with the militant workforce Hamas.
When Doocy was once called on all over Wednesday’s White Home briefing, his first question was once in regards to the U.S. apparently going against a longstanding policy on negotiating with groups known as terrorists.
“If the U.S. has a longstanding policy that we do not negotiate with terrorists,” Doocy mentioned, “then why is the U.S. now negotiating directly — and for the first time ever — with Hamas?”
Hours earlier, it was printed in a record from Axios that the U.S. was once keeping “secret talks” with the group for the release of hostages in Gaza. They were held by presidential envoy for hostage affairs Adam Boehler, and they took place in Doha.
“Well, relating to the negotiations that you’re relating to,” Leavitt responded, “to start with, the special envoy who’s engaged in those negotiations does have the authority to talk to someone. Israel was consulted on this matter. And, appear, dialogue and speaking to folks all over the world to do what’s in the most effective passion of the American folks, is something that the president has proven is what he believes is excellent faith effort to do what’s proper for the American people.”
Doocy then requested if the talks had been with reference to the hostages or if the events concerned also discussed Trump’s proposed takeover of the area. Leavitt declined to elaborate additional.
