Twitter is alerting users that they are going to see a transformation of their accounts as the company takes care of some a lot-needed housekeeping.

Elon Musk, who owns the social media platform, tweeted Monday that the corporate will commence purging inactive accounts that will lead to some current customers seeing a drop in their follower count.

“We’re purging debts that have had no job at all for several years, so you’re going to almost certainly see follower count drop,” Musk tweeted.

TechCrunch stated that the drop in followers is “something that may be more substantive on longtime Twitter debts whose homeowners gathered a big following all over Twitter’s early days as a social community.”

Twitter has been promising to free-up usernames for years, in line with TechCrunch, but this would be the first main effort to fulfill that promise if Musk follows via. The company performed with the theory of selling usernames via online auctions, however nothing has come of that up to now.

Twitter does have an “inactive account policy” that instructs customers to log in at least every 30 days with a view to preserve their accounts lively. “Accounts is also permanently eliminated because of prolonged inactivity,” the coverage says.

Based on Musk’s tweets, many customers have asked what’s going to occur to debts of people that have died. Some even mentioned they want to “memorialize” the money owed. Musk hasn’t responded to those requests yet.

In April, Twitter announced that it was once ending its “Tested” application that took blue checkmarks faraway from Twitter customers, including celebrities and politicians. People who still wished checkmarks must subscribe to “Twitter Blue” for $8 a month.

Data shows that the collection of customers increased by about 12 million given that Musk took the helm in Oct. 2022, bringing the full customers to round 400 million.
